This 100-ton, over 18-meter building is designed to test the performance of new propellers and turbofan engines (such as the Open Rotor and LEAP engine) on more than 1200 parameters under conditions close to those encountered in flight.
This test bench must withstand enormous stresses: in addition to supporting its own weight, it must bear the engines suspended from it and resist their thrust. We are talking about forces of several hundred kN. Thus, the pylon will simultaneously undergo twisting and tensile stresses. It is with these imperatives and this critical specification that Latécoère-Services, in charge of the project, called on TRAXX for the tightening of the bolts in this structure.
During these two weeks of service, TRAXX engineers intervened on-site and ensured the hydraulically tensioned controlled tightening of the entire pylon, comprising 200 threaded rods, M36, and M42 stretched to over 700 kN.
Taking into account aggravating factors (temperature variations, weather conditions, poor accessibility of certain rods), the bolt tightening and assembly service was successfully completed.
Ensuring that a homogeneous tightening tension has been applied to the entire building drastically reduces the risks of future incidents. One advantage of reasoning in tension is that it is possible to track the evolution of assemblies over time by controlling the tension in the rods after one year, five years, ten years… a real guarantee for the future.
